The Hammig String Quartet is named after a German violin maker who happened to have made the violin belonging to a founder member of the quartet. Although he hasn't played with us for many years, the name is still with us. First formed in 1989, we are based in London, and all our members pursue their own musical careers alongside the quartet. We are David Burton and Paul Collen (violins), Jane Tyler (viola) and Sean Turpin (cello). Our main focus is giving recitals, and in recent years we have been giving between 12-15 each season. Our repertoire is chosen carefully each year and we include a mixture of well known and less mainstream pieces. For a complete recital repertoire list click here. Sometimes we invite guest players to make up quintets, and have worked in the past with clarinet, double bass, flute, guitar, piano, trumpet and a second viola. We have played at the St George's Arts Festival locally in Beckenham on several occasions, and are regular performers there throughout the year. In 2001 we visited Leichlingen Germany where we performed Walton's Quartet in A minor and in February 2003 returned there with the Dvorak Bass Quintet. Other regular venues include The Usher Art Gallery Lincoln, The Colour House Theatre at Merton Abbey Mills and St Mary's Church Henley, and we have performed at music clubs in Seaton, Ruthin, Welshpool, Dolgellau and Dwyor. "Walton's String Quartet in A minor demonstrated the ability of the Hammig Quartet to handle the wide ranging moods of the work from reflectiveness to ebullience which generated great applause from the listeners." Solinger Tageblatt

"The quartet really turned on the emotional power for this moving work (Tchaikovshy Quartet no 1 in D). Their instinctive feeling for the music led to an electrifying performance." Lincolnshire Echo
